FY 2026-27 (AY 2027-28) rules, including 4% cess, the 87A rebate and surcharge. Take-home ignores PF and professional tax. An estimate to help you choose, not tax advice. Check with a CA before you file.

How the two regimes work

The new regime has lower rates but almost no deductions. You only get the ₹75,000 standard deduction. The old regime has higher rates but lets you cut your taxable income with 80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest and NPS.

So the real question is simple: are your deductions big enough to beat the lower rates? For most people earning up to ₹15 lakh with only PF and a small insurance policy, the answer is no.

In the old regime the tax-free limit is ₹3 lakh from age 60 and ₹5 lakh from age 80. A 4% health and education cess is added on top of the tax in both regimes.

A quick example

Say you earn ₹15 lakh a year and have ₹1.5 lakh in 80C and ₹25,000 in health insurance. In the new regime your tax is about ₹97,500. In the old regime it is about ₹2.03 lakh. The new regime saves you over ₹1 lakh, even with full 80C.

Good to know.

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in the new regime?
Yes. If your taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less, the Section 87A rebate cancels the tax. For salaried people the ₹75,000 standard deduction comes off first, so a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax.
Which regime is better for me?
If your deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest and NPS) are small, the new regime usually wins. The old regime only pays off when your deductions are large, often above ₹4 to ₹5 lakh a year. Move the sliders above to see your own answer.
Did Budget 2026 change the tax slabs?
No. The slabs, the ₹75,000 standard deduction and the 87A rebate stayed the same as FY 2025-26 under both regimes.
Can I switch between regimes?
Salaried people can pick the regime every year when they file their return. People with business income can switch back to the old regime only once.
Why is my take-home lower than this?
The calculator does not take out your PF contribution, professional tax or other salary cuts. Those lower your monthly credit but most are not tax.
